Described as "an artist who is able to preserve the present moment for eternity," by Dr. Maria Egri, Vasarely Museum Director, Gabriel offers a rich and provocative collection of dreamscapes that seem to emerge from a lost memory or a strange and fascinating mist. Says Egri, "He summons the moods, the desires from past times, and tells a tale which is not concrete reality, but appears in our dreams." So unique is his style that Gabriel Nostalgia is a phrase used by his critics and contemporaries to describe it. Distinct among living artists, Gabriel's astonishing imagination and drawing mastery evoke Francesco Goya, while the irresistible moodiness of his canvases suggests Rembrandt.
Gallery director Paul Uhler says, "The show is a tour de force for Gabriel who continues to explore the subconscious. His process is particularly interesting in that he goes into a meditative state before he starts to paint. When he begins working he blocks out sections of color, allowing his images to emerge from the paint. I compare it to cloud gazing."
Born in 1952, Gabriel has exhibited his work throughout the world. His paintings reside in public collections in major museums such as the Musée des Beaux Arts in Belgium, the Kaposvár Museum in Hungary, and the European Contemporary Fine Artists in Tokyo. The recipient of many honors, he was awarded the European Artist of Merit membership in 1984.
