You'll see fascinating bronze sculptures by the Ohio-born Hinds, influenced by years living in Europe and particularly inspired by classical Italian wax castings. Attracting a lot of attention in the art world, his work also reflects the proud ethnic traditions of the Caribbean where he spent time teaching. As counterpoint, Gibbons, who was also born in Ohio, will present acrylic paintings distinguished by unique markings that recall Cy Twombly and a startling palette with fantastic imagery reminiscent of Francis Bacon. Says Gibbons, "Lately I've been using a wet-on-wet technique to free my markings and develop richer, more painterly layers."
At this point in his career, the 80-year-old Hinds has accumulated collectors from all over the world. Not yet out of his twenties, Gibbons has already won numerous awards for his work, including first prize for the Barrett Art Center's New Directions '04 competition presented by the curator of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
"This is the gallery's first two-person show, and it's thrilling to combine all this creative energy in one room," says gallery director Paul Uhler. "Our clients are sure to be moved by such a harmonious union of opposites represented by these two highly collectible artists." The gallery is shifting its focus from European to regional American artists, and the first show of the year signals this fresh approach. Uhler says, "We look forward to sharing Robert Hinds and Eric Gibbons' distinctive visions and introducing some surprising and exciting works, so be sure to stop by and have some fun."
