Susan Weller

Artist's Statement:

My paintings are inspired by my frequent travels to Italy. The ancient walls of this country's cities and villages reflect the history of generations past, while the façades with their peeling plaster reveal colors that are remnants of the richness of the Renaissance. My palette derives from the ochers and sun-worn reds of these walls, as well as from the rich reds found in the paintings of Renaissance artists such as Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese.

The abstracted windows, walls and doors of my paintings act as portals to meditation and contemplation. Passing through the portals encourages the viewer to move beyond the façade and enter a world that lies cloistered from view. My paintings are intended as a place for solace or inspiration, where one can enter into a Zen-like meditation.

The richly textured walls of Verona, Rome, and countless small towns and villages, proudly display their marks of patching and repainting as a visual reminder of the history that has preceded us. In my paintings, I seek to evoke memories of this storied past and the noble architecture of our ancestors.

Each time I take the physical voyage overseas, I am pushed to a new level of awareness of mankind's continuum in the history of the world.
